Keeping track of video game releases isn’t as easy as it once was — the volume of games released each week is constantly expanding, and they’re spread over a mind-boggling array of platforms (consoles, PC, Mac, handhelds and mobile).
Well, I’m here to make things a little easier on you. Every week I’ll rattle off five games I think you should check out. These articles are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week — think of them as a nice rounded tasting menu. Each week I’ll try to highlight several games from different corners of the gaming landscape (handhelds, consoles, indie, PC, you name it) then finish up with a “Pick of the Week”.
Hit the jump for the five games you’re going to want to check out this week…
This Week’s Game That May Or May Not Actually Be Coming Out
The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 – Faith (PC, Oct. 11th)
The scuttlebutt is that the first episode of Telltale’s Fables adaptation, The Wolf Among Us, is coming out this week. There’s been no confirmation from Telltale, but then they have a history of not announcing release dates for new games until hours before they’re released, so who knows what’s happening. Best-case scenario, you’ll be playing Telltale’s latest, mature, beautiful, adventure game this Friday.
This Week’s Dance Game
Just Dance 2014 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii & Wii U, Oct. 8th)
The latest edition in Ubisoft’s surprisingly strenuous, “wave the Wiimote and/or Move controller around” dancin’ series comes out tomorrow. Hey, don’t act like you’ve never played a little Just Dance — the series has sold over 40-million copies to date, so somebody must be playing it.
This Week’s Strategy RPG
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness (PS3, Oct. 8th)
Okay, so get ready to be confused — so far there have been four main Disgaea games, but this latest title in the series isn’t Disgaea 5. It’s instead a direct sequel to the first Disgaea, featuring all the same main characters from that game. Got all that? Well, even if you don’t, you still might want to try Disgaea D2 out if super hardcore, obsessive strategy RPGs are your thing.
This Week’s Willem Dafoe Game
Beyond: Two Souls (PS3, Oct. 8th)
So, is Beyond: Two Souls going to be a breakthrough in cinematic gaming, or is it just going to be an overambitious mess? Well, it’s David Cage game, so it’s probably going to be both! Either way, I have a feeling the game’s going to be worth experiencing.
Pick of the Week
Pokemon X & Y (3DS, Oct. 12th)
Pokemon X & Y hit this Saturday, and for the first time in uh, well, pretty much ever, these new games are actually doing something new! Fully 3D graphics! The ability to customize your trainer! Cloud Pokemon storage! Mega evolutions! And for us old timers — Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur back as starters! Even those of you who tuned out on the whole Pokemon thing a while ago might want to give this one a look.
Gotta catch ’em all! Planning to grab any of the above-mentioned games? Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let everyone know.
