After our X-men theme week, we return to Gamma Squad’s regular Friday comic book cosplay feature, spotlighting the best superhero (and villain) related costuming from the cosplay community. The last few weeks have seen lots of activity in the cosplay community at cons , with events organized by groups like TheSuperheroCostumingForum.com, so we look forward to spotlighting some of these activities over the coming weeks.
Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and each month we host a cosplay contest. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.
The theme for this month is:
But in the meantime, let’s continue with this week’s selection!
American Dream cosplay at Dragon*Con 2011. Photo by Huey Bible. Source: Flickr
Direct from the MC2 universe steps Shannon Carter AKA American Dream. There’s a lot of Rile 63 Caps around, but this take on an established character definitely stands out. A great costume and a great shot.
Black Canary at Otakon 2011. Photo by coolsteel27. Source: Flickr
A killer old-school Black Canary costume as seen at Otakon. It’s great to see a different take on an oft-cosplayed character.
Doctor Octopus cosplay submitted to our Flickr Group by theno2fan
This absolutely stunning Doc Ock costume is one of the stand out cosplays of all time. Some incredible work has gone into recreating the movie style mechanical arms. Just amazing!
Ame-Comi Mera costume by HeyKannaya on Deviantart. Source: Deviantart
Based on the Ame-Comi range of figures from DC, this is a different take on Mera, but definitely one of the most outstanding costumes out there. It’s amazing what cosplayers can produce with a little bit of craft foam and a huge amount of creativity.

So much impressive cosplay on display here, it wouldn’t be fair to single anyone out. But extra points have to go for the nice composition of the shot. That’s one imposing looking Galactus! Thanks to Mockingnerd for the submission!
Guy Gardner cosplay at Otakuthon 2011. Photo by hypersapians. Source: Flickr
Guy Gardner – everyone’s favorite Green Lantern, right? Well, Guy seems to think so. This cosplayer’s certainly got the look down in this great shot of his costume.
Spider-woman cosplay at Dragon*Con 2011. Photo by FotoToad. Source: Flickr
Jessica Drew’s seen something of a revival at Marvel over the past few years, so it’s small surprise that cosplayers have followed the lead and promoted the character to one of the most popular comic costumes. This version definitely hits all the right notes.
The Death of Supergirl recreated at Dragon*Con 2011. Photo by Ricochet Blue. Source: Flickr
Recreations of classic scenes is always a favorite with cosplayers, but this one stands out thanks to two great costumers showing their art at its best.
Sif cosplay at Dragon*Con 2011 by Anna Aesthetic. Photo by Huey Bible. Source: Flickr
Anna Aesthetic is one of the more well-known cosplayers on the scene and her costumes always attract plenty of attention. And with good reason. This is another classic.
Moon Knight, Deadpool and Elektra cosplayers at Kapow Comic Con submitted by Carlos F to our Flickr Group
A great submission to our Flickr group, showing the skills of not just one, but three fab cosplayers. Looks like a team-up we’d like to see in the comics.
