After surviving 66 days in the open ocean, South Carolina fisherman Louis Jordan was spotted standing on top of his capsized sailboat by a German-flagged container ship and was rescued by the Coast Guard on Thursday. It was the first time anyone had seen or heard from Jordan since he left the Bucksport Plantation Marina in Conway, S.C. on January 23, and he is reportedly healthy other than an injury to his shoulder.
From the Virginia-Pilot:
It’s unclear how long he’d been living like that, but 37-year-old Louis Jordan told his rescuers and TV reporters that he’d been catching and eating fish to survive. He told reporters overnight that he also drank rain water. He was forced to bail water out of the boat with one hand and arm because of a shoulder injury to his other arm.
If there’s a silver lining to being stranded at sea for over two months, I imagine it’s that you hold a lifelong trump card whenever someone tries to complain about their day.
“I am just having the worst morning. First, Starbucks was out of dark roast, and now the dentist says I have a cavity!”
“One time, my boat capsized, and I survived on rain water for nine weeks.”
No contest.
