Richard Curtis wrote Notting Hill and directed Love Actually, so it’s perhaps not surprising that his first foray into sci-fi resembles a twee British version of Groundhog Day. In About Time, Domhnall Gleeson (AKA Bill Weasley) is informed by his father (Bill Nighy) that he’s inherited the ability to time travel by going to a dark quiet place and concentrating. He uses this power to improve his relationship with Rachel McAdams, because of course that’s what you do. And yes, I am going to watch this movie pretending it’s a Harry Potter spinoff about Bill Weasley learning time travel spells.

Realizing that he could time travel within his own lifetime, Tim Lake stepped into a wardrobe — and vanished. He awoke to find himself trapped in the past, driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. His only guide on this journey is Bill Nighy, an observer from his own time. And so Tim Lake finds himself leaping from regret to regret, striving to put right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap… will be the leap home.
About Time opens on November 1st in the US and September 6th in the UK.
