“Defense of the Ancients” is one of those mods genuinely worth playing to the point it becomes an actual, separate game. In fact, it’s becoming two, actual, separate games, one of them from Valve and one of them from Blizzard, and they’re currently suing each other over who gets to call their game what.
But, whether or not the title changes, a major detail got leaked to Kotaku: “BDOTA” will be free-to-play.
It’s interesting because F2P games are generally built around what’s diplomatically called a “microtransaction” model, aka “nickel-and-diming”. It’ll be curious to see whether Blizzard goes with that or some other way of making money.
