Here are the comics I can’t wait to read tomorrow:
The New Deadwardians #7
I’ve been following this series from the start, and Dan Abnett’s careful mixture of Edwardian detective fiction, vampires, and zombies is a clever idea that works partially because it’s not all about the zombies and vampires. They’re there, and always present, but they’re not the focus of the story. Similarly, as Abnett’s inspector works his way through a bizarre murder, the first in decades, he also finds himself working back to his own humanity. Our buttoned-down hero doesn’t particularly enjoy or like being a vampire, and it makes for fascinating characterization and reading. Similarly, the art by I.N.J. Culbard has a simple line that belies his careful research and economy; a facial expression is created in a few short strokes. In short, if you haven’t picked this mini up yet, now’s really the time to start.
Happy! #1
It’s a comic about a dying hitman being saved by a flying blue cartoon unicorn. And it’s set during Christmas.
Why, yes, Grant Morrison wrote it. How’d you guess?
Joking aside, yes, it’s Grant Morrison… with Darick Robertson handling the art. There’s simply no way to turn this one down if you remotely like comics.
Gambit #3
It’s not nearly as strong as Hawkeye, but I’ve found myself actually developing a pretty strong affection for this goofy heist-centric book. Part of it is just the fact that Marvel has realized we only care about Gambit’s thieving when he’s actually, you know, stealing things. And it’s a little cheesy that he’s got what amounts to a time bomb in his side, but even as the overeducated part of me is rolling my eyes at some of the flaws, the twelve-year-old in me is enjoying the hell out of this book. It’s stupid fun superhero comics at its best.
What are you looking forward to? If you need some help, here’s this week’s list.
