Samurai, archers, and superheroes doin’ it are all key to three books we’re looking forward to this week.
47 Ronin #3
Stan Sakai and Mike Richardson are currently adapting the Japanese legend of the 47 Ronin, staying as close to the history as possible. It’s a compelling book not least because Sakai and Richardson treat it like a documentary, in their own way: While they make a few subtle decisions that history doesn’t necessarily bear out, they stick as close to the facts as possible while still telling a compelling story.
It’s also nice to see Sakai working in a non-funny animal mode, even if Usagi Yojimbo is a fairly serious book. In short, it’s a serious samurai comic, and a compelling story, at that. We’ll have a full review of this book tomorrow.
Sex #1
Or “Joe Casey Talks About Superhero Boning”.
Leaving aside the title that Image Comics is milking for all that it’s worth (They’re encouraging you to buy Sex at the FLCS), the premise actually sounds a lot more engaging than shallow. Simon Cooke, our hero, has given up running around in spandex. He’s back in the city he used to defend, but he’s just a civilian now.
Needless to say, it’s a bit more complicated than just taking off the costume, though.
As goofy and shameless as the advertising campaign is, this book does have a really good hook to it and we’re curious to see what Casey comes up with.
Green Arrow #18
Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino hit the ground running with this book; the first issue of their run featured Ollie’s best friend being murdered, his company in fiscal ruins, his ass thoroughly kicked, and the revelation that he was never supposed to have left the island he was stranded on.
Oh, and Komodo is on his ass out to kill him. In short, Ollie’s having a crappy day, and we can’t wait to see just how crappy it gets.
Looking forward to something else? Take a look at the full list and let us know.
