We’ve been following Edge Of Tomorrow since back when it was still called All You Need Is Kill, as it’s an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s light sci-fi novel of the same name. The story follows Tom Cruise’s character as a soldier fighting against an alien invasion, and he’s trapped in a Groundhog Day style time loop in which he keeps reliving the last day of his life, getting better at fighting the aliens each time. And so Lt. Col. Bill Cage finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap… will be the leap home. (I may be confusing Edge Of Tomorrow with something else.)
Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) is the one shaking his camera at this, and the film also stars Emily Blunt as a Special Forces warrior. Running around with the metal exosuits weighing an average of 85 pounds each and playing Special Forces seems like it would be a stretch for Blunt, but she tells USA Today about her training regimen, which involves weight training, sprints, yoga, wire work, gymnastics, and more. “I even learned Krav Maga, a lethal martial arts using pretty much everything including your teeth to destroy,” Blunt told USA Today. “That was pretty fun.”
You know what also sounds fun? Watching Tom Cruise explode over and over. Here’s the first trailer, released just a few minutes ago.
Edge of Tomorrow opens June 6th, 2014.
Run, Tom! There might be gays in there!
