Ed Brubaker is sometimes in danger of typing himself. He’s been doing noir comics for years, and knows the genre inside and out, forwards and backwards. So what’s a new twist?
The occult? That’s not a new twist.
Well, not in anybody else’s hands, but Brubaker makes it work. Boy, does he ever make it work?
We don’t want to give too much away about the story, especially since there are plenty of rave reviews elsewhere. But one thing that stands out is the energy Brubaker brings to Lovecraftian mythos in comics.
Brubaker strikes a pretty sharp balance between the crime story aspects and the supernatural aspects: he doesn’t push either too far, and creating a sharp balance that doesn’t take either too far.
We’re not sure how we feel about it as an ongoing, although we want to read the next issue. But, then again, we want to read the next issue, and that’s a glowing recommendation in of itself.
