Brooklyn Hipsters Are Trying To Open A Museum Dedicated To Nancy Kerrigan And Tonya Harding In Their Apartment

In a blatant attempt to out-Portlandia the show Portlandia, two residents of Williamsburg, Brooklyn have announced their intention to open a museum dedicated to the rivalry between 1994 Olympic ice skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. The inspiration — a documentary on Netflix and maybe some alcohol and/or weed. The location — the hallway of their apartment. A Kickstarter was launched with a financial goal of $75, enough to cover the cost of enlarging pictures of the skaters. Two days before it shuts down, it has received almost $1,500 from backers.

I’ll let the future curators, roommates Matt Harkins and Viviana Olen, explain further:

Part of the museum team’s research has been the realization that everyone is either a Tonya or a Nancy (if you’re thinking about it, you’re a Tonya. This of course is made more confusing by the fact that if you immediately thought you were a Nancy, you are most definitely a Tonya. The only real way to be a Nancy is to have very long lines in your body. If you thought you were an Oksana Baiul, well, aren’t you just perfect, WE SEE RIGHT THROUGH YOU).

They want to blow up pictures really big and hang them up in the hall. Their favorite pictures are ones that have Nancy and Tonya together. Tonya is always looking at Nancy out of the corner of her eye.

Indeed, America — and perhaps, the world — should have at least one hallway dedicated to the scorching Tonya Harding Side-Eye. But that’s not the only reason Matt and Viviana are ready for this undertaking:

Matt works at a Museum and Viviana is a really positive person so this feels like a pretty natural transition.

If they raise a ton of money Matt and Viviana will quit their jobs for a year and dedicate themselves to the museum including more research and the possibility of a touring exhibition where they’ll go to wherever Tonya lives and buy her a really nice dinner.

Go-getters! Among the prizes for backing the Tonya Harding Nancy Kerrigan 1994 Museum are hanging out with Matt and Viviana and talking about Empire, official museum t-shirts, personal tours, and for the swankiest ballers who donate $1,500 or above, a wedding at the museum:

“Matt and I will both become officiated and you get a tray of cookies and everybody gets T-shirts, nobody has surprisingly bought that,” Olens said.

Shockingly, no one has taken Matt and Viviana up on that offer which makes me think that romance is dead. Since they have more than exceeded their goal, they’re looking forward to being able to use more high-tech ways to display their artifacts and pictures. And if they raise even more money, they can fund a shot-for-shot remake of the Windows 95 instructional video starring Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry. Because the world demands it.
