Well before he made kinda gross movies about Adrien Brody boning genetically engineered creatures, Vincenzo Natali was just a Canadian with a dream and a limited budget. Which he turned into a pretty awesome feature called “Cube”, about six people trapped in a maze of, well, cubes, some with death traps and some with the way out.
“Cube” was actually pretty good, subverting a lot of expectations, but it chickened out at the end by not telling us exactly what was going on. Granted, the terrible sequels did that, but still.
Anyway, Lionsgate, which owns the rights, obviously wants to restart the franchise, especially now that “Saw” is finally deceased. But I’m not so sure “Cube” will have the same longevity, if for no other reason than it’s substantially less bloodthirsty and when it is gory, less prone to trying to hide it behind pseudointellectual B.S. “Cube” worked because of the character dynamics; the death traps were just a means to an end. We’ll see if Lionsgate gets that as the franchise moves forward.
Also, ten bucks says porn parody “Pube” hits disc before this, if it actually happens.
For giggles, the original “Cube” trailer on the next slide.
