Konami is hosting the Metal Gear Anniversary event in Tokyo. Today at the event Sony and Hideo Kojima announced they are making a Metal Gear Solid movie. This is not a repeat from 2007, when a Metal Gear Solid movie was being produced by Michael De Luca (Boogie Nights) but fell apart after rumors Konami wasn’t offered a budget large enough for the movie they wanted to do. The new Metal Gear Solid adaptation is being produced by Avi Arad, the former chairman, CEO and the founder of Marvel Studios. Arad is also attached to in-development adaptations of Uncharted, Mass Effect, Twisted Metal, and Pac-Man. Yes, a Pac-Man movie.
There’s good news, great news, and bad news here. We’ll start with the bad stuff before it gets better (like having sex with us, except for the getting better part). The bad news is that Avi Arad has been behind some awful bombs recently.
Arad is […] credited as producer (or executive producer) on some of the great comic book movies: Spider-Man series, the Blade series, the X-Men series, Iron Man. His name has also been credited on the bad: Daredevil, Hulk, Elektra, the Fantastic Four films, Ghost Rider, X-Men 3 and Spider-Man 3. Since leaving Marvel, his projects have been laughable: Man-Thing (20% rotten tomatoes, 4.1 imdb rating), The Bratz movie (7% rotten tomatoes, 2.6 imdb rating). The Amazing Spider-man is probably the biggest and best in the post-Marvel years. [/film]
The good news is that Arad seems to have a good vision for the film, saying on the stage at the Metal Gear Anniversary event, “For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now biggest genre in cinema. Video games are the comic books of today. We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed.”
The greatest news comes from Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, who has already promised Uwe Boll will not be involved, saying “It’s impossible we’d ever do a movie with him.” I could hug Kojima right now.
