Back in April 2010, a student named Lisa Rene created a Tumblr account that allowed her to post some very unusual photoshops. Specifically, they were images of classic pin-up girls with Robert Downey Jr.’s face. While I could ask a million questions, I’m never one to judge, so I’ll simply go with Lisa’s justification in the introduction to her aptly-named site, Pinup RDJ:
Vintage pinups are the pinnacle of art. Robert Downey Jr is the pinnacle of sexy. It’s not rocket science.
It’s certainly not. With a fondness for American pin-up artist Gil Elvgren (and others), Lisa posted dozens of her creations for more than a year, offering us an inexplicable delight in seeing the face of Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes attached to the banging, full-figured Kate Uptons of yesteryear. Alas, Lisa has trailed off in recent months, having only posted one image and a few random thoughts since September 2011.
Perhaps the meme had run its course. Perhaps Lisa has grown tired of her beautiful creation. Or perhaps she’s just a really busy student and doesn’t care that some of us desperately need ways to waste time at work. Whichever reason it may be, we can only pray that Lisa soon catches a second wind. Maybe she can run out a special edition of USO pin-ups in time for The Avengers. We ask so little.
