The University of Oklahoma disbanded the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and expelled two students after a video of SAE members singing a racist chant went viral online. The story is far from over, though, now that the SAE chapter has announced plans to sue the university and possibly the school’s president David Boren.
SAE has hired Stephen Jones to represent them. Jones has previous represented Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing trial, Republican Mark Foley during his congressional page solicitation scandal, and Bobby Wayne Collins, who was found guilty of murdering Mervin Thrasher, as well as his wife and two children.
Jones claims that SAE’s members are being unfairly labeled as racists and bigots after their fraternity house was shut down, and he claims that what happened is being “exploited” by the school.
Jones says the two students who were expelled because of the incident have apologized sincerely for their remarks, and now the incident is being exploited.
He said they lacked judgment in a social setting, but they should not be tarred and feathered as racists.
Neither SAE nor Jones have stated exactly what they will be suing the school for and on what grounds, but it looks like SAE is trading in their racists chants for the shrieking wail of the wambulance.
