Last time we checked in with Kirsten Dunst, she was making some unpopular statements about gender roles. I made fun of this in a very flippant way, even telling a dumb story that’s probably not even really true, and somehow it got picked up by mainstream media and then conservative blogs, and then Glenn Beck even quoted me and said my name which came out of his mouth on air because of a stupid joke I made that spiraled out of control into INSANITY.
So, I was very, very hesitant to cover this new dumb-ish thing that Kirsten Dunst said — but GODDAMMIT, I have a passion for the dumb things of this world and if you take that from me, I might as well just go lay down and die.
Kirsten Dunst was interviewed by Sofia Coppola for W magazine. I’ll give Coppola a pass on her involvement here because I really like her sparking wine that comes in a can with a mini straw. At any rate, the filmmaker asked Dunst about her experience working with different directors and whether or not any had ever been “handsy” with her, and Kirsten said this:
I feel like you and I are so on the same page about how to approach things. Have you ever worked with a director you didn’t agree with? And if so, what did you do?
I have, and it takes all the fun out of what you do. You just get through it instead of having a meaningful experience.
What if a director pounces on you while working? Has that ever happened?
No [laughs]. I don’t give off that vibe. I think that you court that stuff, and to me it’s crossing a boundary that would hinder the trust in your working relationship.
I understand that in these interviews, sometimes things are taken out of context or spun the wrong way, but did Kirsten kinda-sorta just suggest that actresses who are taken advantage of by directors are asking for it? Because that sounds like what she might have just said. So yes, I guess being a respected actress from a very tender age gives off the kind of “vibe” to directors that you don’t have to blow them for a role. See, every struggling actress that has ever had to trade casting couch favors? Just like, have a different vibe or something. It’s that easy.
