It’s no secret that Benedict Cumberbatch has a pretty loyal legion of fans. Call them Cumberb*tches, Cumberbabes, what have you, but don’t ever call them anything less than dedicated. They write ballads for him and upload them to YouTube, they attend all of his movie premieres (every.single.one.) and they all share the same dream of one day staring into that otter-shaped face and having him wax poetic in his dreamy (if slightly lisped) British accent.
Unfortunately for them, those dreams have officially been shattered. The actor, who went old school with his engagement announcement last year is not only off the market, but he’s about to be a dad. Cumberbatch and fiancee Sophie Hunter are reportedly expecting their first child. The couple have been attending awards shows together for the past few months thanks to the actor’s film The Imitation Game and this weekend, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Hunter’s slyly concealed baby bump went all but unnoticed. A rep for the actor had this to say about the happy news:
I am delighted to confirm that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are expecting their first child. They are both over the moon.
This latest development will probably speed up that wedding date but until then, let the wordplay commence. Will it be called a Cumberbaby, a Cutecumber, or my personal favorite, a BUNderdict in the oven? (That last one was an original from a fellow Uproxx writer and as such is copyrighted.)
