Previously we brought you the story of Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old boy who was arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school in Irving, Texas. He proudly presented his invention in class, but the school’s reaction was anything but positive. For Ahmed’s creativity, he was rewarded with an invitation to MacArthur High School’s principal’s office. He was then taken into custody on suspicion of building “a hoax bomb.”
In the hours that passed, the #IStandWithAhmed hashtag rode high on Twitter. He received an enormous amount of support and well wishes from those who could see that he was simply an exceedingly bright young student. Ahmed took to Twitter and expressed how overwhelmed and surprised he felt form the outpouring.
Thank you for your support! I really didn't think people would care about a muslim boy. #Thankyouforstandingwithme #IStandWithAhmed

Ahmed also tweeted this photo of himself on the way to his lawyer’s office. He’s wearing a smile, but it’s a sobering sight to see a young teen in need of an attorney.
Going to meet my lawyer. pic.twitter.com/YCxOOeOz3Z

By and large, the Internet has Ahmed’s back. People flocked to Twitter with their own supportive photos and jokes, which poked fun at Ahmed’s school and police department. In addition, some people expressed disbelief, disappointment, and outrage at Ahmed’s treatment.

As a Texan, I'm honestly ashamed. White men can openly carry guns but brown kids can't make clocks. Jim Crow in disguise. #IStandWithAhmed
