Inexplicably, Donald Trump is head and shoulders above his fellow candidates in the recent polls, with a new CNN poll showing him at 32 percent support, with his closest rival, Ben Carson, only coming in at 19 percent. Despite saying insane things regularly, Trump is somehow the face of the GOP right now, whether they like it or not.
Late Night with Stephen Colbert, while still ironing out a few small bumps, is off to a cracking start this week, and Trump has been providing him with plenty of comedic fodder. Last night, Colbert cited a recent focus group covered by Time that narrowed in on precisely why voters seem to be buying his blow-hard persona. One quote in particular was especially troubling:
“We know his goal is to make America great again,” a woman said. “It’s on his hat. And we see it every time it’s on TV. Everything that he’s doing, there’s no doubt why he’s doing it: It’s to make America great again.”
Colbert runs with this nonsense, encouraging Trump’s fellow candidates to get hats of their own, because Trump’s power is clearly channeling directly through his. While Trump’s complete inundation of all political discourse is exhausting, at least Colbert is back on television to make it slightly less painful.
