Moments ago, New York City mayoral candidate and forever-shamed congressman Anthony Weiner held a painfully awkward press conference to discuss a new batch of sexually-charged Formspring messages that were exchanged between him and an unnamed woman, supposedly during the summer of 2012. Obtained by the website The Dirty, the messages, which Weiner sent under the pseudonym “Carlos Danger,” range from “Meh, that’s harmless” to “You horny dog, you” to “Seriously, someone needs to cement this guy into a cold shower.”
Weiner claimed that “some of the things posted today are true and some are not,” but he once again reiterated the same talking points from 2011 about moving forward with his wife, Huma Abedin, of whom he repeatedly praised for giving him a second chance. He then segued that into once again asking the people of New York to give him a second chance, before he dropped the ultimate (figurative) shocker – he let Huma speak.
Weiner’s wife very nervously declared that she loves and believes in her husband, before the candidate agreed to take “one or two questions” from the press. Ultimately, he just stuck to the same rhetoric that his spokesperson laid out earlier today.
“I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have,” said Mr. Weiner in a statement from his campaign spokeswoman. “As I have said in the past, these things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress.”
“While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me,” he added. “I’ve apologized to Huma and am grateful that she has worked through these issues with me and for her forgiveness. I want to again say that I am very sorry to anyone who was on the receiving end of these messages and the disruption that this has caused. As my wife and I have said, we are focused on moving forward.” (Via Politicker)
Below is video of the press conference. WARNING: it is somewhat painful to watch, especially when Huma steps up to the podium.
Just for poops and giggles, let’s rewind to one of his apologies from 2011.
“To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it. I’m deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife, and our family, my constituents, my friends, my supporters and my staff,” he said, claiming he’d posted the Twitter photo accidentally as a “joke” and then “panicked.” “I lied because I was ashamed at what I had done, and I didn’t want to get caught.”
“I have made terrible mistakes,” Weiner told reporters. “I have not been honest with myself or my family. … I should not have done this, and I should not have done this particularly when I was married.” (Via CNN)
Again, as one of the reporters at the press conference asked about to no avail, Weiner got into trouble in 2011 and offered that second apology, yet here we are in 2013 discussing the apology that he had to issue today for these messages that Weiner/Danger allegedly sent in 2012, which would mean that he broke his promise to everyone, including his wife. This guy’s alleged sexual discrepancies are about as confusing as the X-Men movie timeline. Meanwhile, Carlos Danger is the new Ron Mexico.
Anyway, happy National Hot Dog Day everyone! We couldn’t have asked for a more appropriate story.
