Like all technology, Snapchat has the capacity for both good and evil. Depending on who’s wielding its face-morphing filters and instant messaging capabilities, the photo-sharing app can spread fleeting joys or, in rare cases, facilitate criminal activity. Dani Mathers, a Playboy Playmate, covertly snapped a photo of a woman changing in an LA Fitness gym locker room and reportedly posted it to her Snapchat. “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either” was the image’s caption.
Los Angeles police have managed to track down the woman in the photograph, reportedly in her ’70s, and are urging her to press charges on the grounds of “dissemination of private images.” According to TMZ, the victim is “more than willing to testify and cooperate in any way she can to bring Mathers to justice.” Mathers claims she intended to send the pic privately, an explanation that would not annul the charges. Her lawyer Tom Mesereau, who served as legal counsel to Michael Jackson during his 2o05 child molestiation trial, told the New York Daily News his client “never tried to hurt anyone at any time, and certainly never tried to break any law.” If convicted of the misdemeanor, Mathers faces up to six months in jail.
Mathers has been banned from all LA Fitness gyms but not from giving herself braces or cat ears.
