In a complete break from recent trends, the six Baltimore police officers who were charged in the death of Baltimore’s Freddie Gray will face trial as a grand jury has indicted them for their involvement. The charges range from involuntary manslaughter to depraved heart 2nd degree murder for the driver of the van, Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr.
State attorney Marilyn Mosby made the announcement on Thursday afternoon at a press conference.
A grand jury in Baltimore has indicted the six police officers charged in the arrest of Freddie Gray, who died April 19 after being injured while in police custody, the state’s attorney for Baltimore City, Marilyn J. Mosby, said Thursday.
Gray’s death ignited strident protests in Maryland, almost in sequence with the hotly debated fatal 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown. (Officer Darren Wilson, who shot the bullet that ended Brown’s life, was not indicted by a St. Louis county grand jury.) The death of New York City’s Eric Garner, by way of an unsanctioned chokehold, also stirred unrest when the police officers involved were not indicted by a Staten Island grand jury.
Mosby first moved to charge the officers in the incident, believing she had gathered enough material evidence to implicate each person’s direct or indirect involvement in Gray’s brutal demise.
