Last week, Patton Oswalt’s beloved wife Michelle McNamara passed away suddenly in her sleep at the age of 46. The true crime writer and caring mother was loved by many, and the outpouring of condolences and remembrances from dozens of celebrities and fellow comedians was immediate and incredibly sincere. Her loss will surely be felt by the writing community and friends of the couple for a long time to come. Nobody will have a rougher time than her family though, and Patton has worked through his loss partially by posting tributes to his wife on Twitter and encouraging fans of her and her work to donate to 826LA – a non-profit that supports the writing and creative skills of young children. His latest tweet, in which he shares a quote from his young daughter, is the most touching thing yet.
"When your mom dies you're the best memory of her. Everything you do is a memory of her." — Alice Oswalt, 7
— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) May 1, 2016
Patton and Michelle’s daughter Alice is only 7 years old but somehow is more profound than most people when forced to confront the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one. The sentiment behind her statement is something that many don’t remember, or can’t process, when dealing with death. As heartbreaking as it is that a 7 year-old lost her mother so young, it shows wisdom far beyond her years and offers a lovely reminder that even when somebody passes away, the actions of their closest friends and family are a continuing legacy of their life. From this glimpse at Alice’s views on life, it looks like Michelle’s legacy is in good hands indeed.
