A Texas man literally stopped traffic Sunday afternoon on I-45, one of Houston’s busiest highways, so he could propose to his girlfriend of a year-and-a-half. Vidal Valladares Navas, 24, said that the particular stretch of highway was particularly meaningful for him, as it was where he took his girlfriend (now fiancee), 23-year-old Michelle Wycoff, on their second date. The couple had gone for a ride on Valladares Navas’ motorcycle, when he pulled over so they could admire the lit-up view of the Houston skyline.
Valladares Navas told Wycoff that they were headed to a party, but in reality had friends and family in eight cars tailing them, who then blocked the lanes four cars wide and two cars deep.
That’s when Navas told his girlfriend of a year and half to get out of the car.
“I said, ‘Are you serious?'” Wycoff said. “Then I saw all my family and friends with cameras and I looked where Vidal was and he was down on one knee.
“Honestly, I didn’t think about if it was a good idea or a bad idea. I was just so happy in the moment. I love him so much.”
Although traffic was only blocked for about 35 seconds, many were quick to point out the dangerous nature of the stunt, and that someone could have been seriously injured or even killed by a pileup of cars. The Houston Press in particular called it an “outrageous pomposity perpetrated by people who have no regard for the safety of others.”
For what it’s worth, the Houston Police Department is not going to be seeking charges against the couple, but stress that this sort of thing is not something that they would encourage anyone else to attempt.
