One of Microsoft’s biggest announcements at this year’s E3 was that the Xbox One is becoming backwards compatible with most major Xbox 360 games. In fact, it turns out Xbox 360 games actually run better on the Xbox One than they did on their original console.
So, now that Microsoft has come out of the box with backwards compatibility, Sony and the PS4 can’t be far behind, right? Well, not so fast. Eurogamer caught up with Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, and he sounded surprisingly taken aback by Microsoft’s backwards compatibility announcement…
“It was surprising. I didn’t think it was possible. There must be lots of engineering effort. They talked about 100 games, but what kind of games will be included? Is it smaller games or big games? We don’t know.”
When asked whether Sony would be following suit, Yoshida didn’t give a promising response…
“PS3 is such a unique architecture, and some games made use of SPUs very well. It’s going to be super challenging to do so. I never say never, but we have no plans.”
The other thing he doesn’t say is that Sony is heavily invested in its Gaikai cloud service, and if they let gamers play PS3 games on their PS4, they’d probably prefer it be through that. So there you have it, in at least this one area, advantage: Xbox One.
