This post contains spoilers from Ant-Man, so if you haven’t seen the film and don’t want any spoilery information, shield your eyes! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
All Marvel acolytes know to stay through the credits for short scenes that hint at upcoming films, and fans were not disappointed with Ant-Man‘s offerings. The first of two scenes is an interaction between Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly). The two have spent the entire film at odds over whether or not Hope should take on the suit previously worn by her mother, Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp. According to the film, Janet had gotten pulled into the quantum realm and lost, causing Pym’s hesitance to hand over the suit to Hope. Despite being a stronger fighter and more adept at ant communication, Hope is instead relegated to the sidelines in favor of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang.
However, in the first end credit scene, Pym shows Hope a Wasp suit that her mother never got to use, eliciting an “about damn time” response from Hope. Does this scene hint at a next generation Wasp to suit up and join the Avengers? Director Peyton Reed seems to think so.
“(The scene) may or may not sort of give you insight into Evangeline Lilly’s character and where she might be headed… I think we can expect her in movies later… She kicks ass.”
Marvel has come under a significant amount of criticism lately due to its lack of diversity, so this is a step in the right direction. As much as we like them, not every Marvel hero should be a handsome white dude named Chris.
