For the most part, the new Tomb Raider games have taken a more down-to-Earth approach to Lara Croft’s adventures. Dinosaurs, monsters, and mythical creatures have largely been removed and replaced by mercenaries with machine guns. It makes more grounded, relatable games, but still, longtime Tomb Raider fans can’t help but pine for the days when Lara was shooting T-rexes in the head on the regular.
Well, the first story-based DLC expansion for Rise of the Tomb Raider looks to be bringing back some of that old-school weirdness. Baba Yaga: Temple of the Witch sees Lara Croft tracking the mythical Russian sorceress. Along the way, Lara runs up against mysterious shadowy creatures and even Baba Yaga’s legendary chicken-legged witch’s hut. Of course, there is some implication early in the trailer that all this strangeness may be the result of Lara breathing in some hallucinogenic spores, so maybe she doesn’t actually fight a chicken-legged house, but this looks like an interesting ride nonetheless.
Microsoft and Square-Enix are promising Baba Yaga: Temple of the Witch will add “hours” of new gameplay to Rise of the Tomb Raider (they don’t clarify how many hours exactly). The DLC will arrive sometime in January.
