The experience of movie stars like Jennifer Lawrence show how hard it is for grown men and women to grapple with America’s wage gap. So, it’s interesting to get some children to try to explain why the wage gap exists, but that’s what Jimmy Kimmel Live has done in this video.
The adult offscreen asks kids, “Why do you think women get paid less than men for the same jobs?” Some of the answers are flat-out weird in that kid logic way. For instance, one cherubic girl answers, “Girls don’t work as hard as the boys.” Okay, so far so depressing. So, what are girls doing instead of working hard? “Texting and running on the track.”
One older girl seems to get it. She starts by saying, “Women should have equal rights…maybe if we have a good group of people to help around the world, or maybe a good president who could help.” Who would be a good president to address this issue? “Um, probably Donald Trump.”
When asked, “Do you think women are not as good at jobs as men?” a very small boy answers, “They’re very good, and they work all the time like my mom.” How about the men? “They work, too.” When asked who works harder, the boy says emphatically, “Moms!” Another boy says the wage gap exists for women because of this: “I think because they’re very underrated. Because they can do more, but people expect them to do less.” Sounds like the spectrum of what grown ups think.
