Will Smith plays Deadshot in the new Suicide Squad movie. This fact may have been overshadowed by everybody’s preoccupation with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and making fun of Jared Leto, who plays the Joker. However, Smith was part of a block party in Miami on Monday where a Suicide Squad mural was unveiled. Robbie, and Jay Hernandez who plays El Diablo, were also there. None of that matters, though, because Will Smith performed “Miami.”
The 1998 single from Smith’s iconic Big Willie Style album is arguably his biggest hit. Given the fact he was in Miami, it was only right for him to perform the song. The crowd, unsurprisingly, was really into it, as the abundance of people holding up their cell phones to film it shows. After all, the song is a love letter to the city they were in, and also getting to see Smith perform music is a rare treat these days.
Smith gave it the old college try, even though the song is almost 20 years old now and he’s been a movie star for decades, and he involved the crowd in a little call and response to make up for the fact it wasn’t the most impressive performance of “Miami,” given the circumstances. Robbie seemed to be enjoying herself, at least. Now, if Deadshot were to sing “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” in Suicide Squad, that would be something special.
