Okay, let’s take care of the bad news first: Netflix’s latest original series phenomenon Stranger Things hasn’t been renewed for a second season just yet. There have been rumors, but we can’t confirm the existence just yet. But don’t panic. The series, which debuted earlier this month and serves as a wonderful throwback to science fiction and horror cinema of the ’80s, already has a rabid fan base that Netflix has noticed.
Also, the creators definitely want to make more.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos discussed the network’s lineup, dipping in some talk about the streaming platform’s process in funding and creating the shows it has now become so famous for.
And you better believe Stranger Things was brought up while discussing this process. Sarandos clarified that despite some desires, the show has not been renewed yet and Netflix wants to “take some time to be thoughtful about the process.” Admittedly the idea of the show not being renewed yet may be a bit nerve-wrecking for its fans. But Sarandos’s comments are far from a cancellation announcement. In fact, when asked about what it takes to get a show renewed — with a reporter citing that even the Rob Schneider comedy Real Rob earned a second season — Sarandos responded, “We look for shows that can sustain multiple seasons right off the bat,” going on to say that, “Our shows tend to go more than one season.”
So there you have it. Stranger Things has yet to be officially renewed for a second season, but the positive response to the show combined with the creators intent to do more, don’t be surprised if we end up getting more of everyone’s new favorite Dungeons and Dragons crew running from monsters and uncovering government conspiracies soon.
