A one-minute “announcement trailer” for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness was released in the middle of the night, so of course we’re awake at 3 AM writing about it. Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot aren’t putting the full two-minute trailer out until December 17th. You can also catch the first nine minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness before showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at select IMAX theaters starting next Thursday.
The teaser shows a montage of destruction of the type we saw in the poster of Benedict Cumberbatch standing before a destroyed London in the shape of a Starfleet medallion. The teaser’s voiceover is Cumberbatch delivering the typical villain soliloquy. (“Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance.”) We still don’t know for certain which character he’s actually portraying although we have some ideas.
As for Benedict Cumberbatch’s baddie, the actor is being coy, seeming to suggest he’s not all that he seems, even if he stands in front of a ravaged London in the poster. “He is very ruthless,” he told a Tokyo press conference via RadioTimes. “He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes have intent and reason.” [The Playlist]
Is the reason that his parents gave him a name like “Benedict Cumberbatch”, thus ensuring he would engage in nefarious misdeeds?
Star Trek Into Darkness opens May 17, 2013. The teaser is below, with HD available at Apple. Also, Ryan Gallagher at CriterionCast noticed the subtitled Japanese version is 15 seconds longer, and we’ve embedded that below as well.
But before we get to the videos, can I just say this scene ripped my heart out and stomped on it?
“Is there anything you would not do for your family?”
