When “Outlander” returns from its lengthy midseason hiatus on April 4, viewers will immediately hear something very different, specifically Sam Heughan's voice.
Through eight episodes, Caitriona Balfe's Claire has had the narration, just as Diana Gabaldon's entire book is from Claire's perspective. But with the episode titled “The Reckoning,” Jamie Fraser has the voice-over, which meant a big change for Heughan.
“We get to see that he's not as maybe 'perfect' as we thought he was,” Heughan told me on the PaleyFest 2015 purple carpet for “Outlander.” Seeing the world through Jamie's eyes is a reminder of how young the character is, even if the Scottish thespian is 34.
“There are moments when he asks maybe a little childishly or a little bit like a brat, but other times he's very forward-thinking, very grown-up,” Heughan notes.
In our conversation, Heughan discussed the frequency with which fans address him as “Jamie” versus “Sam” and he notes the similarities and differences fans would find between actor and character.
