Yup: ‘Xena’ is getting a reboot

A reboot of beloved action-adventure show “Xena: Warrior Princess” is currently in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. NBC and NBC Universal International are in an “extremely early” stage of restarting the series, which featured Lucy Lawless at its helm.

It's unclear if Lawless would be involved in front or behind the camera — perhaps both — but THR's sources say that producers seek “the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of 'The Hunger Games'' Katniss” as they put a new spin on the heroine.

According to Lawless herself, the reboot is still a fiction: she tweeted this afternoon to say so.

HitFix actually managed to speak to Lawless about this very possibility while we were at San Diego Comic-Con this month. Lawless had long touted the possibility of a movie, but simply returning to the material period seems like a no-brainer.

“I don't know what the holdup is,” said Lawless in our video chat. “It's about who's got the rights [to the series]. But that's a piss poor excuse anymore. I think they just…find who's got the rights. Freakin' pay it. It's better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing. Don't waste this opportunity. Reinvigorate that franchise…They're fools not to bring it back.”
