Natalie Portman played Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequels – The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith – but she's not sure her son is ready to watch her performance just yet.
Star Wars films, while dealing with violence and other adult themes, have always been considered family friendly but they could certainly be scary to some younglings.
While visiting Jimmy Kimmel Live the other day, Kimmel asked Portman if her five-year-old son had he seen her in Star Wars. He hasn't, with a pretty good reason from mom.
He has not but he knows about it, of course. Yeah, it's kind of a shame, because when I made it I was like, 'This is going to be the coolest thing one day when I have kids, I can show them.' And boys, of course, are obsessed with it and know all about it before they've seen it. Then I realized, I die in the movies. So I feel like it's kind of a scary thing to show your kid.
Yeah, a five-year-old watching their mom “die,” not to mention after giving birth, would probably be a bit traumatic. Not to say some healthy conversation between the parents and their child isn't called for regardless of when he finally watches, but I think Portman made the right call. (I'll ignore her comment about boys being the only ones obsessed with Star Wars…)
