MGMT announces new self-titled album

MGMT are preparing to release their third full-length album, which is self-titled, on Sept. 17. Originating members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser recorded “MGMT” with producer Dave Fridmann, who also co-produced 2008″s “Oracular Spectacular” and 2010″s “Congratulations.”

The 10-track Columbia album includes one cover, of Faine Jade’s “Introspection,” which “directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday,” according to a release.

MGMT dropped the album’s opener “Alien Days” during Record Store Day, on limited edition cassette, because, yeah, sure, cassettes. The pop-dance-psych band “have begun assembling a variety of unique visual elements” for videos and live shows, courtesy of “video instrumentalist” Alejandro Crawford, Andrew Benson, Emilio Gomariz, Geoffrey Lillemon, and Chris Timms. “Your Life Is a Lie” will be the first music video release, with director Tom Kuntz at the controls.

MGMT are currently on tour and will head overseas this fall as well. More tour dates for this winter will be announced in July.
