After bending minds with “Inception” and reinventing superheroes with his “Dark Knight” trilogy, Christopher Nolan is sending viewers to space with “Interstellar,” his mysterious new sci-fi film.
As very little is known about the plot — apparently something to do with wormholes, time travel and alternate dimensions — the brand new teaser doesn’t reveal much in that department. Likewise, the only member of the crazy huge cast that we glimpse is leading man Matthew McConaughey, who continues his recent renaissance.
At a time when space exploration has been curtailed, the teaser offers a solemn and impassioned plea to not abandon the natural impulse to explore and find out what lies beyond our fragile little rock of a planet. McConaughey solemnly intones over clips of the Bell X-1, the moon landing and more recent achievements, “Our destiny lies above us.” Some downright spiritual music (frequent Nolan collaborator Hans Zimmer is scoring) underlines the clip’s wondrous testimony to the human spirit. “The Right Stuff” was just the beginning.
“Interstellar” also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck and Matt Damon. We may have to wait for the full trailer to see them though.
It’s also Nolan’s first film without DP Wally Pfister — who was busy making his directorial debut with “Transcendence” — but Hoyte van Hoytema (“Let the Right One In,” “Her”) seems like an inspired choice as a substitute.
“Interstellar” opens November 7, 2014.
