The American Civil Liberties Union received a record-breaking amount of donations — nearly $1 million in only a few days — in the wake of election results. The flood of donations came in after the group said it would unleash its “full firepower” if Donald Trump violates Americans’ rights.
Donations came piling in once the final election results were revealed. The ACLU was quick to ready themselves in the event that a Trump presidency undermines the constitution or enacts any of his controversial campaign promises, including assembling an immigration deportation force. The group was not playing around and promised to be “eternally vigilant every day of your presidency” and “never waver” from upholding the constitution. ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said they have a strong base that will work to fight any injustices:
“Our staff of litigators and activists in every state, thousands of volunteers and millions of card-carrying members and supporters are ready to fight against any encroachment on our cherished freedoms and rights.”
Supporters, who clearly agreed with the group’s messages, pushed the take almost to the $1 million mark. Since Tuesday, the group collected $940,000 in 14,000 online donations since Tuesday. ACLU’s chief development officer Mark Weir told Business Insider how “In terms of online donations in a single day, it far exceeds anything we’ve seen before.”
