Trailers are great, right? They can get you extra hyped for a movie you’re already anticipating, and the great ones can even give you goosebumps. Star Wars trailers by themselves are pretty famous, but since we have no more trailers for Rogue One, it’s time to start looking ahead to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. No? Too soon? Stars Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver recently had some things to say about the anticipation of the trailer for the next installment of the trilogy.
Next to Rey’s parentage, Ridley has been getting prodded for literally anything she might be able to give away about Episode VIII, which is nothing of course. That didn’t stop Empire Magazine from having a conversation. The actor was asked if she’d seen an early cut of the film yet, but it seems Johnson is keeping things close to the vest for now.
I watched a sizzle reel. I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very…[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It’s very, very exciting. Rian doesn’t love showing stuff. I’ve seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it’s fully done. I don’t think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team….
As for when we can expect that first big trailer, Ridley isn’t sure. “I could probably ask, but Rogue One is out in like a week, so I guess we’ll let that come out, be amazing, let people respond to that first,” she told them. “One step at a time! I know there’s [Star Wars] Celebration next year. Hopefully something will be shown there?”
“That’s speculation, by the way,” she added, making sure not to add too much fuel to the fire. On the other hand, if her co-star Driver had his way, we might not get any trailers at all. Cinamablend wondered what Driver thought of the film simply arriving in theaters on December 15, 2017 with no trailers having been released.
“I think that’d be bold. I’d love it, yeah! Then no one would know anything,” he said. “The less people know, I feel like, the more exciting… the more of an event it is.”
It certainly would be bold, but if there’s one franchise who likely wouldn’t suffer for it, it’s Star Wars. Not that it’ll ever happen but it would be nice to see a bit less in trailers. Lucasfilm’s releases don’t really fall into the trap of revealing too much of the plot, but some other studios give too much away these days. So much so that I know people who have sworn off watching trailers altogether. What do you think?
