Every week, it feels like there are more games for more platforms than ever before. So, to help you direct your gaming dollar, we pick out five games that are worth playing this week. Starting with a relaunch, of sorts, to a beloved PC horror franchise.
Pick Of The Week: Prey, Friday ($60, PS4, Xbox One and PC)
For those who didn’t grab the free demo last weekend, which lets you play the first hour of the game, suffice to say Prey has wowed a lot of people. While you might remember the PC shooter from the late ’90s and early ’00s, this Prey is more along the lines of System Shock. As Morgan Yu (never let it be said Arkane Studios doesn’t like a good joke), you’ll get weapons, discover powers, and will need all of it because there are a ton of creepy aliens for you to kill (and steal superpowers from!) before they get you first. Most intriguing, the game will do away with the concept of discrete “levels” in favor of one contained space station to explore, and your decisions affect how the game plays out, much like Arkane’s signature Dishonored franchise. So there’s a little Dishonored, a little Dead Space, and a lot of dead aliens. We’ll have a review later this week.
World To The West, Friday ($20, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Wii U)
The makers of Teslagrad are bringing their adorable Diablo-esque followup out this week as well. It looks to be a lot like the Zelda games of yore, so if you’re somehow done with Breath Of The Wild, this will help scratch that itch. Besides, look how cute it is!
AFL Evolution, Friday ($60, PS4, Xbox One and PC)
Australian Rules football is essentially American football crossed with Quidditch, and, much like American in America football, it’s only popular in Australia. But, if you’re bored of Madden or want to try a twist on the game, this might be worth picking up. If nothing else, the multiplayer lobbies should be absolutely fascinating.
Tumbleseed, Tuesday ($15, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch)
The “rolly roguelike” has a fairly fascinating little mechanic. You balance a seed with certain powers on a board and try to push it up the mountain, while dodging various hazards with a different level every time. It’s an interesting idea, and the price is low enough that if you want something fresh, or something for the Switch, this might be just be your next obsession.
Super Rude Bear Resurrection, Tuesday ($15, PS4 and PC)
Finally, there’s this “masocore” platformer, a parody of the fad of excessive hard platformers where as you die, your corpses pile up in the level until the game is easy enough to beat. Use your stiffs to cover spikes, block enemies, or otherwise protect yourself and get further in what has to be one of the more hilariously grim ideas out of the indie gaming scene recently.
