The last Avengers: Infinity War trailer has arrived, and it’s almost entirely new footage from the movie. Among other things, just what’s happening with the plot is much clearer. Of course, it’s also all bad news for our heroes, but hey, they’re used to it.
Half The Team Will Be Trapped In Space, Thanks To A Mysterious Flying Ring
It looks like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) will get lost in space after Spidey tries to stop that flying ring over one of the boroughs, and Iron Man tries to save him. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) also seems to track them down, but he has fancy teleporting powers, so he has a smoother ride. Instead, they’re trapped on a junk planet and meet 60% of the Guardians of the Galaxy; we see Rocket and Groot hanging out with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as he forges a new hammer.
But at least Spidey is having fun:
Gamora Might Be The Most Important Member Of The Squad
The trailer opens with a monologue from Zoe Saldana’s green swordfighter, and the trailer shows what passes for a tender moment between her and Thanos who, remember, is her abusive adoptive father.
Gamora is likely key, somehow, to stopping all this. How remains an open question.
Thanos Is Probably Killing At Least One Avenger
We’ve already seen him whup Iron Man, and this trailer has him go after Cap:
And try to crush Thor’s head:
Not to mention Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) being tortured by Thanos henchman the Ebony Maw:
Granted, there’s still another movie to go, and there’s also a lot of clues that time travel will be involved in stopping Thanos for good. But it seems likely at least one Avenger goes down for the count, even if it’s only temporary.
Thanos Only Has Two Of The Gems
Keep in mind, his goal is land all six of them over the course of the movie, and at least two, the Time stone and the Mind stone, are powering Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and The Vision (Paul Bettany), respectively. In fact, that’s a detail the trailer explicitly mentions: Strange and the Vision. But in the trailer, we only see Thanos acquire the Space Stone by crushing the Tesseract (which he appears to have taken from Loki after trashing the Asgardian ship Thor and the rest of the Asgardians escaped on in Thor: Ragnarok), and we see the Power Stone, which turned up in Guardians of the Galaxy and was entrusted to the Nova Corps.
And Some Notable Missing Members May Have Something To Do With That
Most fans thought Wakanda was home to the Soul Stone, but Black Panther director Ryan Coogler specifically ruled that out. Instead, it looks like the squad mounts up to protect the Vision, who had a bad time of it in previous trailers and appears to be getting repaired by Shuri (Letitia Wright):
But curiously enough, we haven’t seen much from Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), whom directors the Russo brothers claim “is on his own journey” in this movie, and we also don’t see any of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). This may simply be that the next Avengers movie (which the Russos have said is connected the way Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War are connected) has more about all of this, or we’ll learn more in 2019’s Captain Marvel, but it’s intriguing either way.
