It got a little lost in the Oscars weekend shuffle, but prior to Sunday’s True Detective finale, HBO released new footage from the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. It’s only five-seconds long, but it’s an action-packed five seasons, with Arya Stark seeing her first dragon. Look how excited she is!
Arya has long been fascinated with dragons — back in season two, she raved about a female Targaryen dragon rider to Tywin Lannister. “Visenya Tagaryen was a great warrior,” the youngest Stark daughter said after Tywin praised Aegon Targaryen. “She had a Valyrian steel sword she called Dark Sister.” (You can watch the scene here.) No wonder Arya respects her so much, and why, unlike Tyrion, Jon, Jaime, and Cersei, she’s thrilled to see Daenerys’ dragon (and presumably, the Mother of Dragons herself, who has a new admirer).

Tag yourself: I’m Arya, because it’s a freaking dragon! I’d be delighted to see one of them, too… then the sheer terror of a fire-breathing, winged beast would set in. But before then, all delight! As Ben Wyatt, from Parks and Recreation, once explained, Game of Thrones tells “human stories in a fantasy world.” Arya has a human reaction to a fantastical creature that was once thought extinct. That’s why she’s one of the best (and most relatable) characters on the show.
