The first pictures of the new Robocop suit (above and below) have leaked from the set of MGM and director Jose Padilha’s remake starring Joel Kinnaman, which is currently shooting in Toronto. He looks less like the Robocop we remember than a guy going to a Daft Punk show inside a computer. A Daft Punk, future cyber-world motorcross rally, say. And let me be the first to say, “A BLACK Robocop?!” (*record scratch*)
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before. [via ComingSoon]
There’s sure to be a tsunami of fanboy tears over this, but for MGM and Padilha, redesigning the Robocop suit is pretty much a lose-lose prospect. You’re either going to get “DUDE, THAT’S NOT ROBOCOP!” or “DUDE, YOU JUST RIPPED OFF THE ORIGINAL ROBOCOP!” I would argue that that’s a great reason not to remake Robocop in the first place, but no one ever listens to my white ass anyway. I guess we should be grateful it doesn’t have flames.
Between this and Dredd 3D (which is pretty good, actually), Juilliard is going to have to start offering Method Acting for the Mouth Actor, on how to convey emotions using only the bottom three inches of your face. “Stop using your eyes, Kevin! The artist thrives on limitation.”
