Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Indie Platformer
Munin (PC, Mac & Linux, June 10th)
The latest game to join the crowded indie 2D platformer scene is Munin, a game set in a world of Norse mythology in which you have to rotate sections of stages in order to progress. Not quite as mind-bendy as some indie platformers, but it looks solid.
This Week’s Twin-Stick Shooter
Pulstar (PC & Mac, June 11th)
No, sorry, this isn’t a sequel of update to the cult classic Neo Geo shoot ’em up. This Pulstar is a new twin-stick shooter in which you literally play as a star that has to shoot down other celestial beings. Looks like some simple fun.
This Week’s Obscure Sim Game
Spintires (PC, June 12rd)
Have you ever dreamed of taking control of Soviet-era heavy machinery then driving it across mud-soaked, nearly impossible to navigate terrain? Well, you’re an interesting individual, and you’re also in luck, because that’s exactly what Spintires is! Hey, somehow this game got funded on Kickstarter, so somebody must be into this stuff.
This Week’s WWII Shooter
Enemy Front (PC, Xbox 360 & PS3, June 10th)
Huh, a World War II first-person shooter — it’s actually been a while since I’ve seen one of these. Enemy Front has been in development for a long time (it was announced in 2011), which usually isn’t a good sign, but the game promises to be more open-ended than most military shooters and a number of people behind cult-favorite PS2 shooter Black worked on it, so who knows, it might be surprisingly good.
Pick of the Week
Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper EX+ Alpha (Xbox One, June 9th)
The big “And it’s out right now!” moment of Microsoft’s E3 press conference was Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 blah blah, you get the joke. Basically it’s a new four-player arcade mode in which you can play as all the Dead Rising protagonists past and present. Oh, and you can dress them up as classic Capcom characters, including Haggar from Final Fight, so yeah, this was an obvious choice for Pick of the Week.
There’s sure to be more “And it’s out right now!” announcements as the week rolls along, so keep an eye out. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
