Doom 4 won’t be at E3; Bethesda has announced as much. But at least they did it with this trailer, showing off the Cyberdemon and announcing that, yes, we’ll see a new Doom game before scientists actually open the gates of hell to poke around.
To give you an idea of how long Doom fans have been waiting, this game was announced in 2007 and, by all accounts, had to be burned to the ground and completely reworked in 2011. Granted, you should always be skeptical of Kotaku hit-pieces; with that lot, seemingly every hugely hyped game is in trouble until it comes out.
Still, it’s undeniable that this has been a long time in coming. It says something that John Carmack left the company he founded to join Oculus last year, amid lawsuits and sniping. That even the company’s founder wanted out gives you an idea of how messy this game’s past has been.
It’s also undeniable that Bethesda has ambition for this game. By all accounts, they expect id Software to deliver Skyrim, but with more demons and guns. So, we’ll see what they’ve got coming. But for now, let’s just imagine what it’s like to blow this guy’s face off with a missile launcher. Mmmmmm, missiles.
