If you had spent eight years leading one of the most powerful countries in the world through multiple wars on terrorism and a Donald Trump presidential run, you’d probably want to retire to a beach somewhere, spending the rest of your days drinking margaritas and catching up on all those Game of Thrones seasons you missed. That’s what President Obama plans to do.
Okay, he hasn’t actually admitted to enjoying margaritas (who doesn’t though) or being behind on GoT, but the tropical part of that scenario might just be true. There’s been a lot of talk about how Obama will occupy himself once he leaves the White House. Philanthropic work, more memoir writing, taking a proper handshake etiquette course, they’re probably all on the list but so is owning a T-shirt shack in Hawaii.
The New York Times did a lengthy piece on the president’s nighttime habits recently and, among other fascinating tidbits like how many almonds he eats before bedtime and how long game of Words with Friends takes him, was the revelation from his buddy and current mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel that the pair had plans to run their own clothing shop in paradise one day.
There is time, too, for fantasy about what life would be like outside the White House. Mr. [Rahm] Emanuel, who is now the mayor of Chicago but remains close to the president, said he and Mr. Obama once imagined moving to Hawaii to open a T-shirt shack that sold only one size (medium) and one color (white). Their dream was that they would no longer have to make decisions.
During difficult White House meetings when no good decision seemed possible, Mr. Emanuel would sometimes turn to Mr. Obama and say, “White.” Mr. Obama would in turn say, “Medium.”
So, basically, Obama hopes to one day be living the simple life, with no decisions and small transactions.
