Donald Trump and his camp quickly expressed displeasure after Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” comment the past week, but the harshest comeback may be broadcast on TV. Donald Trump’s campaign worked overtime to launch a Monday attack ad, which condemned Clinton’s comment for “viciously demonizing hard-working people.”
Hitting back at Clinton’s “deplorables” hasn’t gone so smoothly for Trump supporters, but campaign officials are hoping this ad will leave its mark. The ad starts how any usual TV spot goes, with an ominous narrator preaching about the severity of a Clinton presidency. But it then aims for a sweet spot with the video of Clinton’s “deplorables” comment being shown among pictures of Trump supporters. The video even shows the Donald handing out toys to a charity (we presume), so he has covered all his bases.
Like most of Trump’s rhetoric this election season, the ad didn’t focus on Trump at all and instead was just an attack on Clinton. The final image of the ad shows a text saying “You know what’s deplorable? Hillary Clinton viciously demonizing hard-working people like you,” which will surely pull at the heart strings of Trump supporters. CNN reported the ad is being shown on broadcast and cable TV throughout the week. The Trump campaign even shelled out $2 million to run the spot in several battleground states.
