Joel Silver Will Turn ‘Escape From New York’ Into A Trilogy

There was a time when Joel Silver was one of the most respected producers in Hollywood. Lately, though, he’s seemed a bit… off, like when he was going to turn Lobo into a family-friendly comedy. And apparently, those odd plans extend into making Escape From New York into a trilogy.

Speaking to Collider, Joel Silver broke out his plans. And, hey, at least he’s trying to keep up with what the kids like:

There was a videogame that came out a few years ago called Arkham City, which shows how when Gotham became this kind of walled prison and how it became a walled prison. And they never deal with that in the story of Escape from New York, so part of our idea was to kind of see how the city became this walled prison and how the Snake Plissken character was a hero and how he became not looked at as a hero.

To be fair, it’s not the worst idea in the world, but as much as we love Snake Plissken, we thought this franchise was dead for a reason. The urban crime that seemed so endemic and unstoppable in the 1980s has faded as the economy shifted and humanity became a little more hopeful for the future. Also, do we really need a movie about building the wall around New York? Wouldn’t that basically be the plot of The Purge 2?

Also, we do wonder who would be cast as Snake, since Kurt Russell pretty much defined the role. Since obviously this is still the ’90s, we’re pretty sure Wesley Snipes would be willing to do it.
