Somewhere Rex Reed is soiling two diapers at one time out of excitement to review Melissa McCarthy’s latest comedy romp. In Tammy, Melissa McCarthy plays the titular woman whose life begins to unravel around her, as she loses her job and then discovers that her husband has been cheating on her. So she does what any loud, foul-mouthed and irrational woman would do and hits the road with her alcoholic grandmother, who is somehow played by Susan Sarandon. Have we actually reached the point that Sarandon is playing a 43-year old woman’s grandmother? Whatever, I live in Florida, so the age difference isn’t that strange.
Tammy marks the movie writing and directing debut of McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone, who previously played Air Marshal Jon in Bridesmaids. Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Dan Aykroyd and Mark Duplass round out the cast, as Tammy hits theaters on July 2.
