Opening Everywhere: That Awkward Moment, Labor Day
FilmDrunk Suggests: Chilling out a little bit. I don’t know where this new breed of commenter is coming from that flies off the handle about everything, but some of y’all who were commenting on Vince’s That Awkward Moment review need to step back and reevaluate things. Although, I have a feeling most of the people in those comments were Miles Teller. In conclusion, this weekend is lousy for movies.
That Awkward Moment
Rotten Tomatoes Scores: 22% critics, 66% audience (these scores are awful)
Gratuitous Review Quotes:
Take three horny guys, all twentysomethings, mix with a plot that was old last century, and serve to an audience so desperate toilet gags they might forgive a movie wired only with clichés. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“That Awkward Moment” wants to be part “American Pie” and part “Swingers.” It doesn’t get there, but thanks to its cast, watching it try has its moments. – Adam Graham, Detroit News
Armchair Analysis: I hope this movie makes $500 million and they greenlight 17 sequels so it’s all we have to talk about for the next decade.
Labor Day
Rotten Tomatoes Scores: 33% critics, 65% audience (these scores are also awful)
Gratuitous Review Quotes:
Labor Day is the sort of movie where the characters are all extremely watchful: They shoot worried glances at each other but don’t demonstrate much good sense. – Connie Ogle, Miami Herald
It’s hard to tell what Reitman-who also wrote the script, based on the novel by Joyce Maynard-intended here. – Christy Lemire, RogerEbert.com
Armchair Analysis: Memo to Hollywood – Thanks to New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, I cannot take any film with a holiday name seriously. Labor Day could be the greatest movie ever made and all I will see is 30 Rock’s Martin Luther King Day.
