Five Games: ‘Homeworld: Deserts Of Kharak’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but thankfully I’m here every week to guide you through what’s happening with games.

As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, here are the games you need to know about this week…

This Week’s Remastering

Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, Jan. 19)

While largely overlooked by fans, Resident Evil 0 was a solid survival horror game in the classic style. Don’t expect a lot from the story, but the game features a clever character-swapping mechanic and some terrifying enemies you won’t see anywhere else (beware the ZOMBIE BABOONS). This new version of the game will feature touched-up 1080p graphics, tweaked difficulty and a new mode where you play as Wesker.

This Week’s Undersea Adventure

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human (PC, Mac & Linux, Jan. 19)

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is a Metroid-like 2D adventure, with the twist being that it takes place entirely underwater. The game features a very nice hand-drawn art style, and looks to provide a good balance of serene and action-packed moments. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Puzzling Game Show

Attractio (PC, Mac, Linux & PS4, Jan. 18)

Attractio takes place in a world where people compete in a deadly game show, in which they have to solve complex gravity manipulating block puzzles. So yes, Attractio is basically Portal meets Smash TV, and if that’s not a combination that interests you, I’m not sure why you’re reading this video game article.

This Week’s B-Movie Brawler

The Deadly Tower of Monsters (PC & PS4, Jan. 19)

The Deadly Tower of Monsters is a multiplayer action-adventure along the lines of Diablo or Gauntlet. What sets it apart is it’s cheesy ’70s B-movie theme. Step into the shoes of an intrepid spaceman, space vixen, or robot and pulverize hoards of squid people, dinosaurs, and robo-monkeys. As an added touch, you can play the whole game with “director’s commentary” from the game’s fictional Ed Wood-like creative mastermind.

Pick of the Week

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak (PC, Jan. 20)

For the first time in more than a decade, the Homeworld series returns with an all-new entry. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a prequel to the original Homeworld that focuses strictly on ground-based combat (past games in the series featured three-dimensional outer space battles). Deserts of Kharak is being developed by a new studio mainly staffed by folks who worked on past Homeworld games, so with any luck, it should live up to past entries in the fan-favorite series. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
