The Facility From ‘GoldenEye 007’ Remade In Unreal Engine 4 Is A Shot Of High-Resolution Nostalgia

GoldenEye 007 is one of the best, most influential games of all-time. It reinvented the multiplayer shooter, taught us all to hate Oddjob, and proved licensed games didn’t have to be total garbage (something the video game industry promptly forgot again). That said, it sure ain’t a pretty game. Of course most N64 games are blurry, splotchy messes by modern standards, but GoldenEye, with its blockheaded characters and extremely simple environments, looks particularly dated.

But what might it look like if the nearly 20-year-old GoldenEye was given a makeover using the most cutting-edge graphics technology available? Well, YouTuber Jude Wilson did exactly that, recreating some of the areas from the iconic Facility stage using Unreal Engine 4. The results are both nostalgic and kind of strange. This is definitely GoldenEye, but it’s odd to see everything in such detail. Also, GoldenEye isn’t supposed to have lighting effects or a semi-smooth framerate. Too weird.

Sadly, due to complicated rights issues, this is probably as close to a current-gen GoldenEye 007 remake as we’re ever going to get. So, watch the video, dream of what could be, then hook up your old N64 and have a blast despite the ugliness.
